Montgomery County, Maryland, firefighters battled a two-alarm fire on the 12th floor of an apartment building Sunday morning while evacuating residents, a spokesperson for the department says.

Police said they located a male victim who was suffering from gunshot wounds in the parking lot on that block.

“If they hadn’t succeeded I don’t know where we would be, particularly as an African American family,” said Ronald. “But even just changing the Civil Rights movement and the things that followed that, they were instrumental.”
